N.C. Farm Bureau and NCIUA Partner with Department of Insurance in Undercover Sting Operation That Leads to Insurance Fraud Arrest
EmitenTrust.com - Joint effort targets contractors who create roof damage to collect insurance proceeds
RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company (NCFB) and the North Carolina Insurance Underwriters Association (NCIUA) participated in a joint undercover investigation with the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI) Criminal Investigations Division. The operation involved the use of a bait house which led to the arrest of a Craven County man accused of deliberately damaging a roof then reporting it as weather damage to the insurance companies.
Cameron Alexander Hammond, 34, of Vanceboro, was charged with one count of insurance fraud, one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretense, and one count of damage to residential property. All are felonies.
Investigators allege that on Aug. 18, while employed by Carolina Trophy Roofs, Hammond intentionally damaged roofing shingles at a residence in Washington, N.C. He then allegedly made false statements to both insurers, claiming the roof had sustained weather-related damage, in order to obtain insurance proceeds and a commission for a roof replacement.
Hammond is scheduled to appear in Beaufort County District Court on Dec. 17.
NCFB and NCIUA encourage homeowners to take a few simple precautions when a contractor offers a roof inspection:
- Be cautious of unsolicited offers of free roof inspections, especially after a storm.
- Stay present, or ask a trusted person to be present, while anyone is on your roof, and ask for date-stamped photos.
- Contact your insurance company or agent before signing any contract or assignment of benefits.
- Verify that roofing contractors are properly licensed and check their references.
Anyone who suspects insurance fraud can report it anonymously to the NCDOI Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840, or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684. More information is available at www.ncdoi.gov.
