PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS: FIRST NATIONS MUST BE AT THE HEART OF ECONOMIC SOLUTIONS

EmitenTrust.com WENDAKE, QC, Sept. 22, 2026 /CNW/ -- In a geopolitical context marked by uncertainty, trade tensions, and the need to strengthen supply chains, Quebec must be able to rely on all of its strengths. In this regard, First Nations are indispensable partners in building a more stable, resilient economy that is better rooted in the realities of the territories.

In the midst of the provincial election campaign, the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) is calling on political parties to recognize this contribution as an essential part of the solution. The development of territories, natural resources, and major economic projects will only reach its full potential if it is based on a genuine government-to-government relationship founded on respect for rights, free, prior and informed consent, and conditions that enable First Nations to participate fully in collective success. They must be recognized as essential actors in Quebec's political and decision-making landscape.

Such a government-to-government relationship would translate into genuine economic autonomy for First Nations while also strengthening Quebec's own autonomy. As a source of stability, this approach requires, among other things:

-  Predictable and improved access to capital, financing tools, and public procurement opportunities;
-  The inclusion of benefit-sharing provisions in projects;
-  The implementation of a procurement policy favouring First Nations businesses;
-  Better anticipation of training and workforce needs.

"It is time to hear political parties clearly articulate their vision for relations with First Nations. We are ready to play an active role in Quebec's major economic and territorial decisions. However, consent cannot be reduced to an administrative formality, nor can it be taken for granted. It must be grounded in a clear, predictable, and respectful framework in which First Nations governments have the tools necessary to participate fully in decision-making, protect their interests, and ensure lasting collective benefits," said Francis Verreault-Paul, Chief of the AFNQL.
