NEW YORK, Oct. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Small business financing applications hit a record 48,975 in Q3 2026, up 25% year over year, even as measures of applicant financial health weakened, according to the Small Business Health Index (SBHI), released today by 1West, a leader in small business financing. Based on anonymized application data, the index found overall health score fell from 69.1 in Q2 to 65.2 in Q3, while credit readiness declined to 66.7%. Average applicant revenue fell quarter or quarter but remained near year-ago levels.

Average annual applicant revenue fell from $919,000 in Q2 to $738,000 in Q3. Credit Readiness also slipped, from 68.9% to 66.7%. But Q2 revenue was unusually high compared with previous years, and the Q3 figure was nearly unchanged from a year earlier.

"We're seeing more small businesses seek financing, but fewer applicants meet our credit readiness benchmark," said Kunal Bhasin, founder and CEO of 1West. "That gap is worth watching. If it continues, it could make access to capital more challenging for some businesses, even as demand for financing grows."

What do the Q3 findings mean for small businesses seeking financing?

Small businesses submitted more than 141,000 applications through 1West in the first nine months of 2026, already surpassing the approximately 128,000 recorded during all of 2025. Applications continue to rise, even as Credit Readiness has fallen to 66.7%. The divergence raises questions about whether more small businesses could face challenges qualifying for financing if credit readiness continues to weaken. The index tracks businesses applying through 1West, not whether they ultimately receive financing or the terms offered.

How do Q3 results compare with previous quarters and years?

Average annual applicant revenue fell to $738,000 in Q3 from $919,000 in Q2, a decline of approximately 20%. The Q2 figure was higher than the $424,000 to $646,000 range recorded in second quarters from 2022 through 2025.

Q3 revenue was $734,000 in 2025, putting this year's figure at a similar level. Average revenue for the first nine months of 2026 was $796,000, above the annual averages of $439,000 to $583,000 recorded from 2022 through 2025. Applicants had been in business for an average of 8.34 years.

Credit Readiness fell from 68.9% to 66.7%, its lowest level since Q4 2025. The overall index score dropped to 65.2. The average applicant credit score was 650, but 1West changed how it calculates that figure for Q3. Because of the change, the new score cannot be directly compared with the scores reported for Q1 and Q2. The revised calculation also adds about two points to the Q3 composite score compared with the previous method.

What happens next?

Future quarterly reports will help determine whether the gap between rising financing applications and declining credit readiness persists, offering additional insight into the financial health of small businesses seeking capital.

The 1West Small Business Health Index will be published quarterly to track changes in borrower health and financing conditions over time. To review the full Q3 2026 report, including methodology, visit www.1West.com.
